Fleur Smithers rarely veers off the straight and (excruciatingly) narrow. So moving to the seaport town of Toulon to live with her newfound biological mother—an inspector with the French National Police—for one year is a pretty major detour.

Son of France’s crime royalty family and international rugby star, Louis Messette, is devoted to his sport, famille and nothing else. But the saucy American he meets one night changes everything. She sparks a desire in him like no other. Possession takes root. She will do as he commands.

Bit by bit Fleur slips into the Frenchman’s realm of wanton pleasure agreeing to his one condition: that she keep their affair secret. She serves up her heart without reservation in the hub of the glittering Côte d’Azur, and the along the soulful Seine in Paris, unaware of the danger she is in. For her new lover’s “family business” will pit her against her mother, the police woman sworn to bring down the Messettes. And by then, far more than Fleur’s heart will be on the line.

Kassiah: This is my first book by Lesley Young but since I love crime and mafia stories, I jumped at the chance to read The Frenchman. Twenty-three year old Fleur LaSalle Smithers is spending time in Toulon, France, with her biological mother when she runs in to enigmatic rugby player Louis Messette. He’s crass and beautiful and sparks immediately fly.

He was the most visceral man in the room, no, probably that I’d ever encountered. I need to emphasize the man part. As in spark a fire and fend off other hungry carnivores encroaching on his territory kind of man.

She brings him back to her apartment, where things quickly heat up. Unfortunately, Louis bolts as soon as he realizes that Fleur is a virgin.

One moment he’d made me feel sexier than I’d ever known possible. The next, more ashamed than I’d ever felt.

They can’t stay away from each other for long and begin a tumultuous affair. Because of his mysterious family business and his superstar status, Louis asks Fleur to keep their relationship a secret. That’s fine with her since her mother has warned her to stay away from the Messettes. As they spend more time wrapped up in each other, Fleur begins to question who Louis Messette truly is and if she’s willing to be what he needs.

In truth, it was starting to bug me how he seemed to manage a tight control of everything in our relationship, even the style of lovemaking we would indulge in.

The Frenchman had a lot of unexpected action as well as a mystery to solve, and I enjoyed that. I liked Louis’s character and the fact that he’s so hot and dominating.

“You want more? C’est moi qui décide.”

I also loved that the setting was France (*swoon*), and it made me want to go there again.

There were things that I didn’t like, beginning with Fleur. She was an immature brat most of the time and I felt like Louis should have been done with her. I got a little confused at the end with what Fleur was trying to accomplish, but it all worked out so I was fine with it 🙂 There were some grammatical errors–though I read an advance copy and they could have all been corrected in the final copy. There was some weird (to me) word choice, like the fact that Fleur refers to her ladybits as her “snatch” on more than one occasion. Just no.

There are other books in the Crime Royalty Romance Series, with The Australian coming up next. I’m disappointed that we won’t see more of the Messettes in that one–I think there is a lot of story there, but I am going to check out Young’s other titles.

If you’re looking for a drama-filled story with a touch of suspense and a crazy hot French-speaking rugby player, The Frenchman is for you.

***About Lesley Young***

Author Lesley YoungLesley Young is an award-winning Canadian journalist by day, and obsessive novelist by night. Her debut novel, Sky’s End (Soulmate Publishing, 2013) hit #9 on Amazon’s sci-fi romance paid best-seller list in its first three months of release.

Not too long after that, she started dreaming up quirky heroines who lose their hearts to extremely powerful, flawed heroes, only to find out what love really is while on a dangerous adventure abroad. She called it the Crime Royalty Romance series, and landed herself a pretty big agent at Spencerhill Associates. Never one to take the obvious path, Lesley ultimately decided to self-publish. She’s never sure who or what will pop up in her imagination next. The Irishman? The Spaniard? The Hawaiian? Anything’s possible, and she loves suggestions (or recommendations of really hot, er, talented, actors to work as a muses).

Stay in touch with her and feel free to forward on decent options at Facebook.com/LesleyYoungBooks and @LesleyYoungBks (note: Charlie Hunnam’s already taken the lead role of The American—#3 Crime Royalty Romance…coming soon!).
